I recently forced myself to watch all four of the movies in this series for educational and masochistic reasons.
Has anyone here seen them?
My intention on watching them was to analyze what the selling points were and how the movies have garnered such a following as a franchise while being almost unanimously hated.
Ive studied alot of evangelical programs on television and I saw many parallels between the two.
It was punishing to get through the first three but I found the last one to be hilarious. I couldnt tell if this was intentional or if it was just so incredibly ludicrous and overdramatic.
I would recommend you all watch the latest release of this series if you have a sardonic sense of humor, which most of you seem to!
Have any of you seen these films?
I'm quite sure everyone here hates them with a passion but I am interested in if any of you have tried dismantling them for clues on how to make a vastly half-assed product and sell it to millions.
(brainstorming on that tactic is a hobby of mine.)
I saw Eclipse, and that's it. I was lost, but I wasn't mad. Not many films annoy me or make me mad. Only ultra-pretentious films that aren't any good, or popular comedies that aren't funny (Superbad was annoying to me, as was The Hangover, those are just some examples).
My sense of humor is really warped (after all, I'm a Tim and Eric fan), and Eclipse could pass for funny if I remembered any of it. But the most entertainment I've had laughing at something recently was Tree of Life, and I've utterly forgotten what Eclipse was even about. Something with vampires, right?
I saw the first one, and I thought it was okay. Good cinematography. Believable and not annoying romance.
I saw New Moon and Eclipse, and they are pretty awful.
The reason that they are popular is the same reason that Ke$ha and Miley Cyrus are popular -- because there is a certain segment of society that is too young to know that they are shit. You will never go poor appealing to the unseasoned tastes of dumb 12-16 girls and boys. I wonder if there is a talent in doing that, or if it is just a matter of luck.
Guys, you’re being unfair on the films. They’re pretty simple exercises in the delights of sensual romantics (like Hollyoaks) and fantasy-world angst (like Spider-man).
What I’m dying to know is how the books came to be so popular. I tried reading the first Twilight book, and it was the most boring thing I’d read all year. How did millions of people catch onto this, when there are plenty of books like it out there on the market?
There’s got to be complex psychological factors that explain their appeal, factors we snobs don’t understand. Subtle factors that make hits out of things like Twilight, or Ghost and High School Musical. It can't be just because the target audience is 'dumb'.

I would beg to differ on that view of them. The most recent one 'Breaking Dawn'
was so morbid and frantically offensive I actually found it to be alot of fun.
The vampire abortion plot was something so outlandish and absurd that
I couldnt help but find it both entertaining and fascinating. It was much
like the crazy person on your social networking that spams every insane
idea and culminates them into a long rant about their life. In fact I think
thats the key to the film's success. they are much like a social network
that lets you view other people's insane lives and then let your
imagination run wild with ideas about their cheesy gothic avatar.
Twilight could easily be renamed "Livejournal: the Movie".
---It's probably obvious from this post I'm heavily medicated.
I would re-write it but I dont feel like it. Sorry.
I've watch 3 of the Twilight films.
They're ok but frankly don't like the idea of romantaising vampires. They're meant to be scary, not your best mate.

The factor you speak of is that Twilight appeals to youth because they target audience is too young to realize how pitiful and/or unrealistic the behaviors are. And they also aren't old enough to remember other forms of entertainment that covered these themes better. I don't think that not liking it is snobbery as much as it is having a much larger sample size to compare with.
