Deleted scenes from 2001 A Space Odyssey found
"The news was confirmed by legendary effects master Douglas Trumbull who, while working with Dave Larson on a now canceled documentary on the film "2001: Beyond the Infinite—The Making of a Masterpiece," learned that Warner Bros. had found the footage in pristine condition sitting in a studio vault in a salt mine in Kansas. The footage is said to be comprised of scenes and sequences cut by Kubrick following the film's premiere in order to tighten up the pacing."

Oddly enough at the moment it doesn`t seem like Warner Brothers is planning to release the 17 minutes of lost footage any time soon. I agree that it would be a terrible idea to release som sort of "2001: The Premiere Cut" (as the article reffered to it), but I still think it`s odd that it was never made available on the recent DVD/Blu-ray release of the film.

Even though 2001: Beyond the Infinite—The Making of a Masterpiece was cancelled many of the photographs that were to be used in it is available on Douglas Trumbull`s website;
(everything here from alternative takes, storyboards and some screen test for some aliens that was never used in the film)
Here`s a trailer for the film with Trumbull aswell if you`re interested;
